Doordarshan To Add 120 Channels On Its 'FreeDish'DTH Service

Govt owned Doordarshan has renamed its FreeToAir DTH Service DD
Direct+ as 'FreeDish'. Not only that, it all set to get a makeover
like Private DTH company and soon to launch a Call Centre. There is
even more... a new package of 120 Channels which will require a new
range of customer SetTopBoxes is also being introduced!

DD Sources said that the work contract for the same has already
been finished and the equipment is currently being shipped.

"We currently have 17 million active subscribers and expect to add
a million subscribers per month once we start the 120 channel STB
service" - says a DD Official.

Doordarshan DTH's current 59 Channels SetTopBox costs Rs 1200 while
the 120 Channels SetTopBox expected to be priced at Rs 1400.

The 59 Channels include 21 DD Channels and 38 other channels.
Recently it is offering Sony Mix, Mastiii, Dabangg, Zee Anmol, Rishtey
etc. popular channels.

If existing customers want to switch to 120 Channels SetTopBox, they
have to buy the new one. Currently, seven international makers are
supplying the SetTopBoxes to Doordarshan and the plan is to bring new
companies into it. Local SetTopBox manufacturers will be authorized
only after their products comply with BIS specifications.

Until now, customers could only buy the SetTopBoxes through local
shopkeepers. Now Doordarshan setting up Call Centres to interact with
the customers.

The DTH Service will continue to beam off INSAT 4B satellite as it
has enough capacity for the additional Channels Doordashan is going to
offer.
